Full blown "protectionism" of specific products in their entirety or full blown industries in their entirety in practice is wrong. In the long run it curtails freedoms and raises prices. The government should never pick winners and losers or pick exporters versus importers. The free market should decide. But, many countries don't always play fair and the case can be made that the way DJT uses tariffs, especially the "threat of tariffs as a negotiation tactic" against specific countries, "not specific products or industry as a whole" (ex: a tariff on all whiskey or all steel imported) is impressive...
