George Washington & Thomas Jefferson (and most other intellectuals of the day) used a political spectrum line that was essentially a freedom meter. You had "tyranny" on one extreme & "anarchy" on the other. Tyranny & Strong Centralized Government sits today on what we call the Left. Freedom & Decentralized Government sits on what we call the Right. The further you go either way the greater the potential for tyranny or anarchy.
===========================History has proven time & again that the much greater risk comes from tyranny. We seek, "the greatest amount of individual freedom possible consistent with an orderly society."
